Description: This book is a compilation of descriptions of various procedures that are critical to the field of anesthesiology. It is primarily written in bulleted form for ease of reference and includes various pictures, well-organized tables, and graphics.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to serve as "detailed step-by-step instruction on how to perform common procedures" within the field of anesthesiology. It is mainly geared toward resident physicians undergoing anesthesiology training and is specifically designed to communicate "essential information, including lists of equipment necessary, numbered steps to perform the procedure[s], tables of common errors, and methods to troubleshoot." The book does serve these objectives well given its ease-of-reference style and smaller form-factor.
Audience: The book is primarily written for anesthesiology residents and fellow physicians but is also well-suited to those training in critical care medicine and emergency medicine. Additionally, the book is appropriate for critical care nurses who are undergoing training to become certified registered nurse anesthetists.
Features: The book covers most procedures performed by anesthesiologists including vascular access, airway management (including specialized intubation techniques), and various neuraxial anesthetic techniques. Additionally, there are chapters dedicated to certain anesthetic-types such as TIVA and anesthesia for craniotomies and liver transplantation. Most chapters contain photos that supplement the bullet-point style text well along with nicely organized tables of information. As for its physical dimensions, the book is published as a small- to medium-size hardcover text that is moderately portable. Large margins on each page allow for easy annotation. While the book is quite comprehensive in the topics it covers, there are a few areas that would perhaps be useful to include in subsequent editions. Specifically, it would arguably be useful to include information on various regional anesthesia techniques such as peripheral nerve blocks in addition to the neuraxial techniques already discussed. While it may not be feasible to include every peripheral nerve block, a chapter pertaining to nerve blocks in general and information about the general set-up, general dosing, and high-yield considerations of common blocks could be beneficial. Similarly, another useful topic to discuss could be general set-up, maintenance, and function of a transesophageal echocardiography probe. Regarding the physical text itself, this book serves as a great reference tool that can be easily and quickly viewed by a trainee in the operative and perioperative area. It may be worthwhile to publish the text in a smaller form-factor, drastically reducing the white space and therefore making it even more portable and convenient. Even with smaller margins, there should still be room to write in annotations given the bullet-style layout of the book. Lastly, the included photos are slightly grainy in quality, but that does not detract from their usefulness.
Assessment: This book serves as a useful aid to anesthesiology trainees' study materials. It is highly organized, easy to read, and contains a large amount of practical considerations of procedures especially related to airway management and vascular access. It shares similar traits to Pocket Anesthesia, 4th edition, Urman (Wolters Kluwer, 2021), another unrelated pocket reference book for anesthesiology trainees, but focuses more on the procedural topics. The bullet-point style and nicely organized tables provide an easy way to showcase the most important pearls of each topic discussed. Later editions may consider inclusion of regional anesthetic techniques and transesophageal echocardiography. Moreover, it could be useful to provide anesthetic considerations of surgical procedures that require more extensive set-up and planning such as in cases utilizing cardiopulmonary bypass.
