Overview

What better way for a child to learn their ABCs than through the use of bright and appealing illustrations combined with amusing alliteration?! In this beautifully presented hard back book each letter of the alphabet is represented by an animal beginning with the same letter and a descriptive word also beginning with the same letter which is tied into the illustration, for example: A - acrobatic ant, E - eating elephant, L - leaping lion, R - rodeo rabbit. The illustrations have a distinctive vintage look and are printed on a heavy wood-free stock. The book also comes with a dust jacket printed full color on both sides.

Kay Vincent lives in London, UK and runs Ketchup On Everything. She applies her distinctive designs to screen prints, greetings cards, mugs and tea towels among other things and takes inspiration from her collection of 50s and 60s children’s books and flash cards.

Graphic artist Vincent brings a decidedly retro aesthetic to this alphabet book as she introduces an active cast of animal characters through alliterative phrases. On left-hand pages, letters appear in upper and lower case in a font reminiscent of vintage circus posters, while the heavily accessorized animals are shown on the right in flattened, crisp-edged illustrations. The quirky assortment of figures include a yellow “drumming Donkey” in cowboy boots (truth be told, he’s just carrying the drum in his mouth, not playing it), a “hippy Hamster” with John Lennon–esque glasses and a guitar, and an awkwardly phrased “outer space Octopus” seen Rich shades of orange, mustard, turquoise, and brown, along with the cream-colored paper stock, contribute to the throwback look of an offbeat alphabetic exploration.
