Overview

Noses come in all kinds of shapes and sizes that are just right for its particular animal host. Not only do most animals use their noses to breathe but for many animals, the sense of smell helps them find food, a mate, or even to know when danger is near! Following Animal Tails, Animal Eyes, Animal Mouths (NSTA/CBC Outstanding Trade Science Award), and Animal Legs, Mary Holland continues her photographic Animal Anatomy and Adaptations series by exploring many different animal noses and how those noses help the animals survive in their habitats.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

03/01/2019

Gr 1–3—This book is all about noses, which serve different purposes for different animals. For example, smell can be used to find food, detect prey, or choose a mate. Some animals don't have noses, which is discussed as well. Most of the spreads display an animal, such as a bear or a beaver, with straightforward, large-font text explaining the features and purposes of its nose. Kids will enjoy the candid photographs, most of which are provided by the author. The back matter is educator-friendly, as it lists a website with more resources and interactive material. It will also entice children, with information on the science of smell and activities including matching the nose to the animal. The bibliography features one of the author's own books from 2010. There is much to appreciate in this third-person informational narrative. VERDICT For fans of the author's "Animal Anatomy and Adaptations" series, this entry is sure to appeal to young nature lovers.—Elissa Cooper, Helen Plum Memorial Lib., Lombard, IL
