Gr 1–3—In 1897, life is peaceful in Solomon and Anna's small Jewish village in Russia. Suddenly, upon orders from the czar, soldiers destroy homes and religious artifacts. Everyone in the village is frightened, and they realize the only way to have freedom is to leave for America. Solomon, a well-regarded house painter, and his wife, Anna, skilled in mathematics, plan to leave Russia when they have saved enough money for passage. However, Anna persuades Solomon to travel once they have funds for only one passage. She will join him as soon as he earns enough money for her voyage. What begins as a classic story of immigration then takes several turns, as Anna sends her brothers and mother first to America before arriving herself. Each time Solomon waits for Anna to descend the gangplank, he is greeted by another family member. After many years, Solomon finally reunites with Anna, although he's a bit wary he might be greeting Anna's sister, the remaining relative, instead. They now begin a new life in a land of freedom and opportunity. VERDICT Narrator Qarie Marshall skillfully presents Elaine Snyder's tale (Farrar, 2014) like a family member passing down an important memory to a grandchild. Humor, rich language, and delightful illustrations with spoken "word bubbles" enhance this memorable and true story.—Nancy Baumann, Literacy Consultant, Columbia, MO
Anna and Solomon
In 1897 a young man named Solomon fell in love with and married a beautiful young woman named Anna. They lived in Russia, which was dangerous at that time for a Jewish family, so Solomon moved to the United States, where he worked and saved until he had enough money to send Anna a ticket for the voyage across the ocean. But when Solomon went to meet Anna's ship, Anna's younger brother was waiting for him. Solomon took in her brother and worried and saved until he could send the money for Anna's passage again - but this time, Anna's older brother was waiting. When Solomon sent the money a third time and Anna's mother arrived, Solomon wondered if he would ever see his dear wife again.
