Description: This is a collection of reviews from the past two years on eating disorders topics such as treatment, assessment, risk, and comorbidity.
Purpose: The purpose is to update readers on the latest developments and research in the field and provide a concise summary. It also includes multiple references so readers can consult original articles for more complete information. This is very useful and assists with practicing evidence-based medicine.
Audience: It is intended for clinicians working in the area of eating disorders. It appears geared toward physicians and psychologists, but it likely would be a useful reference for those in other disciplines.
Features: The chapters vary, with some reviewing literature from 2004-2005 others 1990-2006. According to the foreword, this edition covers progress since the Part I 2005 edition. The chapters are nicely divided into specific topics such as treatment of binge eating disorders. Each chapter begins with an abstract that summarizes the chapter, then provides a summary of the latest literature in a review format that breaks the topic down into subtopics. A summary and discussions of clinical implications and future directions follow. The chapter ends with a list of references which can be extremely helpful should readers want to obtain more specifics about a study. More so, the authors highlight references of particular significance followed by brief commentary. The main shortcoming is that by the time the book is published and available, many new articles and updated information may be available. However, the book is still very useful and would not be considered outdated. In addition, only a handful of topics are reviewed.
Assessment: This is a wonderful way to concisely review up-to-date practices in the treatment of eating disorders. It is clearly organized, easy to read, and is helpful at pointing out specific resources one can use for more specific information. Readers may use this book itself as a resource or may use it to find particular studies on topics in eating disorders. Given the nature of this field, annual updated reviews are always helpful.
