Description: This is an anatomic guide for anesthesiologists seeking improved techniques for regional and general anesthetics.
Purpose: This is a detailed anatomic review featuring multicolor plates and relevant ultrasound images.
Audience: Anesthesiologists, particularly those with an interest in regional techniques, are the intended audience. The book is written by three senior anesthesiologists from the U.K. with a particular interest in medical illustration.
Features: An overview of nervous system organization, including cranial nerves and spinal cord anatomy specific to anesthetic practice begins the book. Subsequent chapters proceed from head to toe with an emphasis on neurovascular anatomy, particularly in the portions of the body available to anesthesia providers planning regional anesthesia. The final chapter reviews fetal circulation and is followed by a list of secondary references and a brief subject index. Chapters are written in outline format and make use of elegant color illustrations created by the authors. Multicolor tables summarize anatomic relationships while radiographs, including MRI and CT images, summarize deep neuroanatomy. The greatest emphasis is on portions of the nervous system used by anesthesiologists in peripheral blocks. Ultrasound images guiding the approach to block techniques are placed opposite anatomic drawings of pertinent body regions. Most chapters include a small number of references from the primary literature, and they date to within one year of publication. An independent reference page at the end is a listing of approximately 10 major works in the secondary literature. The subject index of four pages is oriented toward peripheral neurovascular anatomy as applicable to regional anesthetic approaches.
Assessment: This book can be strongly recommended for the quality of multicolor anatomic drawings and corresponding ultrasound images. Internal anatomy of the chest and abdomen get little attention, even where ultrasound has been effectively applied, as in, for example, abdominal interrogation as is done with focused ultrasound after injury or rapid assessment of peritoneal fluid and intra-abdominal structures. Neither is bronchoscopy emphasized, despite the importance of this procedure to cardiopulmonary critical care. This book is best used by those interested in peripheral anesthetic techniques.
