About the Author

Stephen F. Hamilton is Professor Emeritus at Cornell University. He taught in Washington, D.C. at a vocational high school for three years before moving on to Cornell, where he retired from after forty years. Hamilton currently works on a project of the Urban Institute to support the growth of youth apprenticeship.

Hamilton (human development and family studies, Cornell) proposes that America import some of the structure and emphasis of the German apprenticeship system to help motivate and train noncollege-bound youth. He advises using American organizations including the Job Corps, Cooperative Education, and Junior Achievement to accomplish this. This is a book on an important topic--an answer to youth unemployment and underemployment must be found and implemented if the United States is to regain a leadership role on the world economic scene.
