About the Author

Richard F. Burton was a nineteenth-century British explorer, linguist, and author. He is best known for his travels to the Middle East, Africa, and India, where he studied languages and cultures. Burton was a polyglot who spoke over 25 languages, and he was the first European to visit many regions of Africa and Arabia. Burton's adventurous life and prolific writings continue to inspire readers and scholars today.
