The aim of this thesis is to determine the nature of pre-contact settlement patterns and subsistence strategies on the lower Adelaide River against the backdrop of the dramatic environmental change that took place on the coastal plains of Australia in the mid to late Holocene period. In particular Brockwell looks at the role of earth mounds as a settlement strategy to cope with local flooding.
