The art history survey text conventionally offers a Eurocentric narrative of artistic development from antiquity to present broken up only by the occasional non-Western "interlude" that usually appears out of sync with the forward march of history. Coauthored by a large team of art historians, this book provides a much-needed break from that model. One of the richly illustrated volume's most striking aspects is its reversal of the survey's chronological order, an unusual decision that undercuts the impression of history as an inevitable unfolding and foregrounds the historicity of recent art. Also commendable are the contextual time lines accompanying each movement that emphasize art's embeddedness within its sociohistorical milieu. Most important is the work's global scope: alongside descriptions of canonical avant-garde styles such as minimalism are informative discussions of understudied subjects—the midcentury Indian Progressive Artists Group, for example. Unfortunately, this wide purview narrows significantly in later chapters—in those covering the 16th century to ancient Greece, the reader encounters little non-Western art, and none produced outside Asia. Worth noting, too, is the volume's division into discrete, single-page entries rather than longer, interrelated chapters, which makes it function more as an encyclopedia to reference than as a tome to read from beginning to end.
