CHAPTER 1

Art Panel Quilt

Skill Level
Beginner

Finished Size
Quilt Size: 42" × 52"

Materials

• 1 (36") art panel

• ½ yard lavender

• 1 3/8 yards large floral

• Batting to size

• Backing to size

• Thread

• Basic sewing tools and supplies

Project Note: If you do not want to insert the flange decorative feature between the binding and the quilt border, purchase only ¼ yard lavender fabric. Do not cut the F flange strips and skip Assembly steps 9–12.

Cutting

From panel:

• Trim panel to 30½" × ½". Note: If panel is trimmed to another measurement, adjust all borders appropriately for finished quilt size.

From lavender:

• Cut 5 (1½" by fabric width) B/C strips.

Subcut into 2 (1½" × 30½") B strips. Set aside 3 strips for C borders.

• Cut 5 (1¼" by fabric width) F flange strips.

From large floral:

• Cut 5 (5½" by fabric width) D/E strips.

Subcut 2 (5½" × 32½") D strips. Set aside remaining 3 strips for E borders.

• Cut 5 (2¼" by fabric width) binding strips.

Assembly

Refer to the Assembly Diagram for positioning of pieces for steps 1–8.

1. Stitch B strips to top and bottom of trimmed A panel; press seams toward B.

2. Stitch C strips together on short ends; press seams open. Subcut into two 1½" × 42½" C border strips.

3. Stitch C strips to both sides of the quilt center; press seams toward C.

4. Stitch D strips to top and bottom of the quilt center; press seams toward D.

5. Stitch E strips together on short ends; press seams open. Subcut into two5½" × 52½" E border strips.

6. Stitch E strips to opposite sides of quilt center; press seams toward E.

7. Sandwich batting between pieced top and prepared backing piece; baste layers together. Quilt as desired.

8. When quilting is complete, remove basting and trim batting and backing even with raw edges of the pieced top.

9. Stitch F strips together on short ends using angled seams to make one long strip. Press seams open to avoid bulk.

10. Trim one short edge at an angle and fold ¼"–½" to wrong side and press. Press in half, wrong sides together.

11. Position and pin F strip along quilt top edge beginning in middle of one front side matching raw edges to quilt raw edges, beginning with folded end (Figure 1).

12. At corner, fold F back on itself making fold even with edge of quilt top (Figure 2a).

13. Make a second fold at a 45-degree angle bringing raw edges up and even with adjacent edge of quilt, referring to Figure 2b and making an angled fold in flange. Pin in place.

14. Continue pinning flange to quilt top and folding at corners (Figure 3). Insert raw end of flange into folded beginning of flange. Note: If necessary, trim length of flange to insert approximately 1½" into beginning.

15. Baste in place ?" from quilt raw edge.

16. Prepare binding and stitch to quilt fronte dges, matching raw edges, mitering corners and overlapping ends.

17. Fold binding to wrong side and hand-stitch in place to finish.
