Overview

Arthritis Research: Methods and Prools is a compendium of data pertinent to the methods and prools that have contributed to recent advances in molecular medicine in general, but to the molecular basis of rheumatic disease in particular. Description: This book describes multiple techniques for analyzing various tissues relevant to arthritic pathophysiology, including synovial and cartilage and bone, and leukocyte behavior in these tissues. The techniques range from the in vivo tissue imaging of joints, to the histochemical and molecular components that comprise the biochemical nature of these tissues.
Purpose: The focus is on the relevance and techniques of the multitude of tools that apply to the analysis of tissues involved in arthritic disease. This volume helps researchers understand why and how a variety of investigative modalities are used.
Audience: The editor has targeted this series at clinicians and researchers in both the clinical and basic science realm who investigate the pathophysiology of arthritic disease. While there are a few chapters that may be immediately applicable for clinicians, the majority of the book focuses on technologies that exist largely within a basic science laboratory. Dr. Cope is well published in the area of the role of TNF and T cells in autoimmune and chronic inflammatory states. He is on the faculty at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology in London, a premier research center that first investigated the role of anti-TNF agents in rheumatoid arthritis.
Features: The book describes the analysis of two main tissues in its first two parts, synovial tissue and cartilage and bone, with the last part dedicated to the analysis of cells within these tissues, such as leukocytes and fibroblasts. Each section further describes the analysis of these tissues at various levels of detail, from arthroscopy and ultrasound to histochemistry and biochemical quantification of components from these tissues. Highly relevant chapters describe the manipulation of cells from these tissues with siRNA or other gene introduction technologies. Each technique is described in great detail to allow the investigator to attempt these analyses with minimal use of other references. Simple but informative illustrations outline most techniques, including color plates of 16 figures. The most significant shortcoming of this volume involves its organization. Since it focuses on the techniques of tissue analysis, rather than separating information by tissue system, it would be more useful to organize that material by tissue/cell isolation, histochemical analysis, and biochemical analysis.
Assessment: This volume offers a comprehensive reference for the analysis of tissues relevant to arthritis research in brief chapters that emphasize how various analyses are performed. What separates this series from other references in this area is its ability to be brief but thorough in the discussion of technically challenging methods.
