Description: Professor Rainsford provides, in this edited book, updates and expansion of information from a 1984 book that he authored entitled Aspirin and the Salicylates. This book contains almost everything you would want to know about aspirin and related compounds.
Purpose: His goal was to provide both a historical as well as a current comprehensive account on aspirin and related compounds. This is a thorough and excellent resource, but I would have liked to have seen a separate chapter on cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors.
Audience: This is an excellent resource for those interested in the historical development of salicylates and related compounds as therapeutic agents, the current development of salicylate-related drugs, or the current therapeutic use of salicylate-related agents.
Features: The preface is followed by a list of useful books on aspirin and salicylates as well as important review articles and common abbreviations and nomenclature used throughout the book. The text is preceded by interesting plates that illustrate scenes and artifacts related to the development of marketing of aspirin since its introduction over a century ago. The first chapter provides an excellent history, including historical photographs, on the development of salicylates whereas the second chapter deals with the evolution of analgesic and antipyretics. The third chapter deals with the natural sources and synthetic development of salicylates as well as their physiochemical properties. A series of chapters discuss the pharmacokinetics of salicylates, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen. The pharmacodynamics and toxicology of salicylates is given in chapters 7 and 8, respectively. Chapter 9 is devoted to the relationship between Reye's syndrome and aspirin use. The remaining chapters focus on the therapeutic use of salicylates and/or related compounds in the treatment of pain, prevention and treatment of thrombolytic diseases, treatment of rheumatic and related disorders, and finally in the prevention of cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and other novel therapeutic actions.
Assessment: It is interesting that after more than a century aspirin is still the "gold standard" for analgesics, antipyretics, anti-inflammatories and thrombolytic drugs. This has recently been brought to the attention of the public with reports of increased cardiovascular events in patients on selective COX-2 inhibitors and naproxen.
