Para se ter uma idéia precisa da influência de Edgar Allan Poe sobre os romances policiais e de mistério que tanto sucesso fariam a partir de meados do século XIX, basta dizer que, não fosse o conto "Assassinatos na rua Morgue" (1841), não haveria Sherlock Holmes (Conan Doyle, 1887), Hercule Poirot (Agatha Christie, 1920), Padre Brown (G. K. Chesterton, 1911), Don Isidro Parodi (Bioy Casares e J. L. Borges, 1950) e tantos outros detetives ou investigadores que até hoje encantam milhões de leitores.
O personagem central deste conto, o francês Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin, poderia ser Sherlock Holmes e o narrador poderia ser o Dr. Watson. O fascinante personagem de Poe, através de um sistema próprio de dedução baseado na sua profunda capacidade de observação dos fatos, é capaz de ler os pensamentos do seu interlocutor e desvendar um dos mais intrincados e misteriosos casos de assassinato já enfrentado pela polícia francesa: o bárbaro duplo assassinato de mãe e filha num apartamento na rua Morgue. Meio século depois, Conan Doyle tomou emprestada a alma de Dupin para criar seu Sherlock. A partir daí o gênero caiu no gosto do público e os grandes personagens se multiplicaram.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was orphaned at the age of three and adopted by a wealthy Virginia family with whom he had a troubled relationship. He excelled in his studies of language and literature at school, and self-published his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems, in 1827. In 1830, Poe embarked on a career as a writer and began contributing reviews and essays to popular periodicals. He also wrote sketches and short fiction, and in 1833 published his only completed novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Over the next five years he established himself as a master of the short story form through the publication of "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and other well–known works. In 1841, he wrote "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," generally considered the first modern detective story. The publication of The Raven and Other Poems in 1845 brought him additional fame as a poet.
