This book offers a concise review of diabetes mellitus enriched by a section containing over 100 striking and interesting illustrations. The purpose is to provide a brief overview of diabetes and to convey through images the wide spectrum of diabetes and its complications as encountered in clinical practice. This book is written for a very broad audience, namely all those who provide diabetic health care. It covers the diagnosis and classification of diabetes, its pathogenesis, complications, and treatment. The most outstanding feature is its extensive section of illustrations. The high quality images are assembled coherently on glossy, oversized pages. Of the many interesting illustrations, those worthy of special note are photographs of patients with rare syndromes associated with diabetes; a practical guide to diabetic supplies and absorption profiles for various insulin regimens; a series of fundus photographs of various stages of diabetic retinopathy; and sections on diabetic foot and skin complications. The illustrations are an excellent aid to the visual recognition of diabetes-related disorders and confirm the old adage that "a picture is worth a thousand words." Although the broad subject of diabetes mellitus is concisely reviewed, some important topics are either omitted or under-represented. The book was published in 1998, yet the author refers to the diagnostic and classification scheme adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1985. Both the WHO and American Diabetes Association (ADA) significantly revised this scheme in 1997, and it is unfortunate that the updated standards are not included. Exercise is mentioned briefly as an adjunctive therapy for NIDDM,when it deserves attention as a central part of the management of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Important recent advances in therapy such as Lys-pro insulin and troglitazone do not receive enough attention. This book makes a unique and worthwhile contribution to the diabetic literature. Several comprehensive diabetes textbooks are already available to specialists in the field. These include Joslin's Diabetes Mellitus, 13th ed., edited by Kahn et al. (Lea & Febiger, 1994), Ellenberg and Rifkin's Diabetes Mellitus: Theory and Practice, 5th ed., edited by Pone et al. (Appleton & Lange, 1997) and International Textbook of Diabetes Mellitus, edited by Alberti et al. (John Wiley & Sons, 1997). This book, however, targets a wider audience and offers probably the finest ensemble of diabetes-related illustrations available.

Description: This book compiles very clear imagery of the end organ complications from uncontrolled diabetes. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose: Diabetes is the most economically impactful chronic disease of this generation, mostly due to the devastating complications. This book aims to quickly summarize the wide-ranging and possibly deleterious effects of diabetes.
Audience: Since diabetes is so prevalent, this book is useful to have on hand in any library for medical education as well as in any primary care office, especially if trainees rotate through. All healthcare disciplines from medical assistants to attending physicians would benefit from reviewing this latest edition. The authors are experts in the field of diabetes and have dedicated much of their lives as educators.
Features: Each chapter has very intentionally selected images which highlight the array of damage that can be associated with uncontrolled diabetes. The retinal images and the skin findings were impressive to read about. This looks like a short book, but every page is packed with useful information and there are no overlapping concepts. Chapters cover pathogenesis, treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and adolescents and children with diabetes. Subsequent chapters cover surgery, acute and chronic complications of diabetes, diabetic dyslipidemia, pregnancy, living with diabetes, and future developments in diabetic care. The book includes a list of abbreviations as well as a subject index.
Assessment: This short book is packed with information. All healthcare professionals would benefit from reviewing this latest edition. Atlas of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Camacho (CRC Press, 2024), has a chapter on diabetes but this book is a more comprehensive book about just diabetes and its sequelae.
