Description: This is a beautifully illustrated atlas of exfoliative cytopathology. The large photomicrographs are of excellent quality and multiple pictures are provided of each entity, showing a full spectrum of morphological variation in both benign and malignant conditions. The authors make excellent use of figure legends, discussing useful diagnostic tips, pitfalls, and ancillary testing.
Purpose: The intent is to provide a reference of cytomorphologic changes occurring in exfoliative cytology samples from numerous organ systems in all of their many permutations, and to show histological correlations of the cytological findings.
Audience: This is a practical reference for surgical pathologists and cytopathologists. Pathology residents and cytology fellows also would find it useful.
Features: The six chapters cover body fluids, gastrointestinal/pancreatobiliary, respiratory, and anal Pap test cytology. Emphasis is on body fluid cytology with the first two chapters dedicated to benign/reactive and neoplastic effusions and washings and the third chapter covering cerebrospinal fluid cytology. Gynecological and urine cytology are covered in different atlases in the series and, as such, are absent from this atlas. Each chapter is filled with numerous photomicrographs illustrating the full range of changes from benign to malignant occurring in a wide variety of exfoliative cytology preparations with succinct, yet informative figure legends. The same diagnostic entity is often pictured multiple times to illustrate variations in cytomorphologic appearance. Histological correlates follow select cytological images with figure legends discussing morphology, immunostaining, and molecular features. Pertinent photomicrographs of immunohistochemical stains are pictured with concise discussions of the immunoprofiles and staining patterns of specific entities. Diagnostic pitfalls and challenges are illustrated and discussed. The table of contents is simple and the index is easy to use.
Assessment: This book is well organized, concise, and would be helpful for improving one's diagnostic skills. My only criticism is a matter of personal preference. As mentioned above, atlases of exfoliative gynecological and urine cytology are separate volumes. I would have preferred one larger book containing all of exfoliative cytopathology. Overall, however, this book would be a handy reference at sign-out for surgical pathologists and cytopathologists, while the ebook increases ease of access.
