About the Author

Dominique Penninck, DVM, PhD, DACVR, DECVDI, is Professor of Diagnostic Imaging in the Department of Clinical Sciences, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Tufts University.

Marc-André d'Anjou, DMV, DACVR, is Clinical Radiologist at Centre Vétérinaire Rive-Sud in the Montréal area, as well as at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Université de Montréal, where he was a professor for ten years.

Both are leading researchers in small animal ultrasonography and actively involved in helping students and veterinarians improve their sonographic skills using innovative multimedia teaching tools.

Description: This atlas of small animal ultrasound contains everything readers need to learn how to perform ultrasound as well as how to improve their ultrasound skills. This edition comes with an online component that includes videos of normal structures as well as some common disorders. This second edition comes seven years after the first edition and adds two new chapters, updates all of the content, and covers complementary imaging modalities.
Purpose: The authors' purpose is to "present a comprehensive and extensive collection of well over 800 figures incorporating high quality sonograms and schematics of normal structures and of common and uncommon disorders." The book meets these worthy objectives nicely. The online component only adds slight value because the book is so good. It is so comprehensive and the quality so high that it is hard to imagine anything adding any value to it.
Audience: The book is appropriate for veterinary students, new veterinarians, and experienced veterinarians needing a refresher in ultrasound or who want to improve their ultrasound skills. It is also appropriate for diagnostic imaging interns and residents in training.
Features: It covers the basics of ultrasound (how to perform, which probe to use, etc.) with detailed images and schematics. It also covers diseases and conditions in an extremely detailed manner that makes it very user friendly. The chapters cover all of the body systems (including the eye) and the diagrams and illustrations make it very clear to novices how to perform and interpret the ultrasound examination. The cardiac chapter has images of a dog, placement of the dog's heart, and placement of the probe, then points to what the image will look like from this angle. Each section is covered in such detail that readers come away with a thorough understanding of the anatomy, the images, and all of the possible nuances.
Assessment: This is one of the best books I have come across. The images and the schematics are top quality and there are multiple images from different angles. It reads as if the authors truly want to convey this information in a way to make readers competent at ultrasound. It should be required reading for every small animal veterinarian.
