Description: This guide effectively uses high-quality, relevant figures and ultrasound images to demonstrate musculoskeletal anatomy and how to perform ultrasound-guided injections.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe techniques used to perform a wide-array of injections/procedures using musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK US). Given the lack of any prior comprehensive reference, this is a wonderful resource for clinicians using this technique. The book easily meets its objectives and will help establish the foundation for performing MSK US-guided injections.
Audience: This would be a welcome addition to the library of any residents, physicians, or other healthcare providers planning to use MSK US. The manual provides an easy-to-read chapter introduction and straightforward outline for each of the injections. Practitioners of various training backgrounds will benefit from this book. The editors and many of the chapter authors are leaders in the field of musculoskeletal medicine and/or MSK US and are well suited to give us this excellent reference/instruction book.
Features: Procedures described include large joint, small joint, bursal, tendon sheath, and perineural injections related to regional anatomy including the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, pelvis, knee, foot, and ankle. Additionally, the book describes tenotomy, hematoma aspiration, trigger finger release, and lavage of calcific tendonosis. When multiple techniques are offered, the authors often declare their preference. Patient position, transducer position, needle orientation, and needle approach/target are all clearly described. The greatest strength of this book is the succinct outline format complemented by high-quality images (figures and US images). The only addition that might further enhance this book is access to videos, either online or on a DVD.
Assessment: As far as I'm aware, this is the first book that provides a comprehensive guide to US-guided musculoskeletal injections. Even if it's not, I would consider it one of the best. It is incredibly well organized and would be an excellent addition to the library of any musculoskeletal interventionist.
