Description: This is a comprehensive work on all aspects of atopic dermatitis. The current treatment approaches, pathophysiology, genetics, environmental, and dietary influences on the disease are all discussed in detail. The immunologic mechanisms of superantigens and macrolide immunomodulators are diagrammed.
Purpose: The purpose is multifold: to present the psychological impact of atopic dermatitis, the immunogenetics, risk factors, therapies and their rationale, and the mechanisms for itch. The authors fulfill all these objectives.
Audience: Medical students, dermatology residents, dermatologists, allergists, general practitioners, and pediatricians will benefit from reading this book.
Features: The complex interaction between overactive phosphodiesterase, autoreactive T-cell populations, external antigens (infection, aeroallergens, diet) are presented in a coherent manner. The immunology is well presented. Amazingly after reading this book, one still cannot provide a concise definition for that old question your patients will ask "what is eczema?" The answer becomes even more complicated after reading this book. There are a few black-and-white photographs in the book depicting atopic dermatitis. I particularly liked the discussion on the role diet plays in atopic dermatitis.
Assessment: I have seen a number of works on this subject and think this is definitely one of the better books available.
