About the Author

Doug Gilmer has been a licensed hunter since he was 12 years old but was carrying a BB gun or a Fred Bear recurve bow and field tipped arrows through the woods of northern Michigan long before that. Doug's first real introduction to archery and big-game hunting came from the legendary Fred Bear himself when he was just a child yet it wasn't until he got older that the real significance of that early introduction to Fred Bear really sunk in. His fascination with turkeys and elk began in the same northern Michigan woods as he observed how careful conservation and management could help re-establish viable and sustainable wildlife populations.

Today, Doug is a freelance outdoor writer and operates Gilmer Outdoors, an outdoor communications, public relations, and consulting company. Together with Dave Hentosh and Tom Asbow he is active in outdoor media and habitat management programs through Wildlife Interactive, LLC. Doug is a popular speaker at youth events, church big game banquets, and outdoor expos. Drawing on his experiences in the outdoors as well as his veteran military and law enforcement experience, he entertains his audience while offering a positive message. His commitment to introducing as many young people to the outdoors as possible is further demonstrated through his involvement with the Kicking Bear Foundation. Doug is a 1990 graduate of Liberty University and received his Masters Degree in Natural Resources at Virginia Tech (whose mascot just so happens to be a large turkey) and his graduate education in counseling at Luther Rice University and Seminary.

Doug serves on the pro-staffs or field staffs of a number of outdoor companies and organizations. Additionally, he is an adjunct professor at Liberty University where he regularly teaches undergraduate courses in adventure and outdoor leadership, education, and therapy.
