Description: This review fairly comprehensively covers the topics on the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) basic level written examination. The book comes with a one-year subscription to a web-based version that is supposed to provide easy navigation and sharing of sections, but, unfortunately, I was unable to access the site even after multiple attempts on multiple computers. Because there was no error message, I am uncertain what the problem was.
Purpose: The authors' stated purpose is to offer a comprehensive review for junior residents in anesthesia to help them prepare for the ABA written exam part I (Basic). The chapters are well written and edited, but there are relatively few questions at the end of each chapter. More questions might have been useful to help readers gauge the way they are likely to be examined.
Audience: The intended audience is anesthesia residents preparing for the examination. These junior residents are likely to find this book useful for clarifying areas where their knowledge is incomplete, as the authors have done a nice job of paring down the topics and providing simple explanations of the areas covered on the examination.
Features: The chapters are all short, in an attempt to concentrate on the areas most likely to appear on the exam.
Assessment: This is a slimmed down version of the classic review book, Morgan and Mikhail's Clinical Anesthesiology, 5th edition, Butterworth et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2013), that limits coverage to the topics examined in part I of the ABA written exam. While some of the chapters have appropriate lists of references and/or further readings, many chapters simply list other textbooks (e.g., Miller's Anesthesia, 8th edition, Miller et al. (Elsevier, 2014), Clinical Anesthesia, 7th Edition, Barash et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2013), or Morgan and Mikhail's), often without even giving a specific page or chapter citation.
