Bealby: A Holiday
Wells (1866-1946) was an English writer, prolific in many genres. He wrote dozens of novels, short stories, works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography, and even two books on recreational war games which set out the rules for fighting battles with toy soldiers. He is now best remembered for his science fiction novels, notably The Time Machine (1895) and The War of the Worlds (1898), and he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. This comic novel first published in book form in 1915 tells the story of a 13-year-old boy's escapades as he rebels against his placement as a steward's-room boy in the grand house of an estate where his stepfather works as gardener. One notable incident sees him cause havoc at a weekend party attended by the Lord Chancellor being held by a nouveau riche couple renting the estate. Prior to book publication the story was serialised in Grand Macazine in the UK from August 1914 to March 1915, and in the US in Collier's commencing in June 1914.
