Beauty of Debris
In Beauty of Debris, we are presented here and there with minute focal points where narratives converge, crisscross, seem to point to conclusions within the poems. Or maybe they don’t. Because it doesn’t really matter if a theme is to emerge from the complexity of this collection. With or without reassuring conclusions, we’re left with the feeling that our dreams do not grow old—ever! People and birds, spiders and clouds, sun and soil, cabins, patios, tiles and so much more... those are the ingredients in the fertile juice of this “Elizabethan” poetry. Like the love that is “never finished, all reversed, unfulfilled...”. Isn’t that great?(Maria do Carmo Brandão)

About the Author

Elizabeth Gontijo started writing like most of us, healthy and young, full of life and curiosity. Back in the day, I imagine she used to keep her poems well guarded, hiding unconfessed thoughts and feelings within drawers we imagined to be secret. And so she should, since those were hard years of vigilant repression.
Then the time came for the cocoon to break open. A subtle pop sound, and the larva emerged from within, scared and curious at once. Larvae, as we know, crawl all over the place, sniffing their way around, perceiving as strong that which apparently isn’t—all the while keeping in mind (?) the steps taken along the way. From this early larval stage, the author transmutated into a chrysalis, only to switch once again, this time into a light, exhilarating and euphoric butterfly. Flapping her colourful wings, full of unsteady hesitation, she freed herself. Spinning in the air, she couldn’t care less for the scaredy little thing left behind in her past.(Maria do Carmo Brandão)
