Overview

The aim of this book is to provide readers with a wide overview of the main healthcare-associated infections caused by bacteria and fungi able to grow as biofilm. The recently acquired knowledge on the pivotal role played by biofilm-growing microorganisms in healthcare-related infections has given a new dynamic to detection, prevention and treatment of these infections in patients admitted to both acute care hospitals and long-term care facilities. Description: There has been a growing recognition of the role of microbial biofilms in healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and the literature on this "hot" field has expanded dramatically in recent years. Volume 1 of this two-volume set describes the clinical features of various biofilm-based HAIs, while volume 2 completes the clinical description started in volume 1 and then details innovative strategies for treatment and prevention based on our knowledge of the biology and pathogenesis of biofilm-based infection.
Purpose: The purpose is to summarize our knowledge of biofilm-based HAIs, for infections that are well recognized as biofilm-based as well as for less well-characterized infections. In addition, it is meant to meet the need to examine forward-looking methods to prevent and treat these all-too-common problems.
Audience: The audience is not the typical clinician, infection preventionist, or trainee. Instead, this book will appeal to the "biofilmologist" or the clinician-scientist who wishes to read a summary of the current knowledge about biofilms in a wide diversity of HAIs, from the well-accepted entities such as intravascular catheter-related infections to those less appreciated such as infections associated with decubitus ulcers, enteral feeding tubes, and cosmetic surgery gel fillers.
Features: The volumes are well organized and well written by authoritative authors. Most chapters are adequately illustrated and referenced. The chapters on innovative prevention and treatment modalities covering such topics as quorum sensing, cell signaling, antimicrobial polymers and biomaterials, photodynamic therapy, and drug delivery are very well done. Although chapters describing the clinical features of biofilm-based HAIs (catheter-related infection, orthopedic implant infections, etc.) are nicely done, these topics have been fully covered in many other publications.
Assessment: Overall, this is a worthy addition to the shelves of clinician-scientists wishing to gain a better appreciation of the role of biofilms in HAIs and those who desire a concise compilation of forward-looking approaches to treatment and prevention of these infections.
