Overview

This volume, Biological and Hormonal Therapies of Cancer, which is part of the series Cancer Treatment and Research, presents selected new information concerning biologic and hormonal therapy of cancer. We have attempted to provide the reader with topics of major interest in a timely fashion. There is renewed interest in biologic therapy of cancer. Two chapters review the role of interferon in the hematologic malignancies and in solid tumors. Vaccine therapies have come to the forefront of cancer therapy re­ cently, and two chapters approach different strategies of vaccine therapies; one reviews the cellular vaccine therapies and another the anti-idiotype approach. The hormonal therapy chapters focus on current uses of endocrine therapy in endometrial, breast, and prostate cancer. In addition, hormonal strategies for the prevention of breast cancer and endometrial cancer, including excit­ ing information relating to phyhemicals, are presented. The effects of tamoxifen on endometrium is a topic of major interest and is discussed in detail. Finally, there is a chapter on estrogen receptor expression and regula­ tion in human breast cancer. These chapters are all written by experts in the field and contain timely and relevant information of interest to laboratory and clinical scientists and practitioners alike. Biologic and endocrine therapies represent major areas of cancer research interest. The advent of newer biologic therapies, including new antibody­ targeted treatments, and the use of biologics as tumor modulators to enhance the effects of other treatment regimens is an exploding avenue of research.

This current review of recent advances in anticancer therapies is a compendium of articles written by leaders in the field of cancer therapy covering previous and current therapies and information from current research protocols. The purpose is to present current information on biological and hormonal therapies for specific solid tumors and hematological malignancies. Such therapies represent major research areas in cancer therapy and are closely associated with the development of vaccines for the prevention and treatment of cancer. This is a well-edited text that meets the editors' objectives and will meet readers' expectations. This book is written for residents, fellows, practitioners, and researchers involved in the care and treatment of cancer patients. The editors and authors are prominent authorities in the various cancer subspecialties. This is a collection of authored reviews of specific biological and hormonal therapies for certain cancers. Included are two chapters concerning advances in the development of anticancer vaccines. Of particular interest are the chapters on breast, endometrial, and prostate cancers, those malignancies that may be most amenable to hormonal therapies. The two shortcomings of the text are the relative dearth of illustrations and the chapter on ovarian ablation therapy for early-stage breast cancer. This chapter, although well written, fails to review the plethora of information concerning improved lifestyle and longevity for those women who are diagnosed with breast cancer and who are maintained in an appropriate hormonal milieu. This is a well-written and well-edited book concerning unique treatment modalities for specific solid and non-solidtumors. It should merit praise from those within the cancer-care community and will be a welcome addition to any practitioner's and researcher's library.
