Description: This is a multiauthored review of oncologic diseases in older persons, with an emphasis on the biological basis of geriatric oncology. It is a volume in the ongoing series Cancer Treatment and Research.
Purpose: The purpose is to examine the phenomenon of cancer in older persons. Cancer is more common with age and the population is aging, but the nature of the biology of cancer in older persons and how best to treat cancers is older persons is not well known. This book reviews the current state of knowledge and future directions of the field. This is a much needed book written by experts in the field.
Audience: This book will appeal to oncologists, geriatricians, biologists of aging, and biologists of cancer. Fellows in these fields will find it a most useful source of information. The authors are all experts in the field and this is a notable series.
Features: The epidemiology of cancer in older persons is covered. The book discusses the biology of tumors in an older host. The questions of treating cancer in the presence of comorbid illnesses in older persons is thoroughly covered. Decision making and guidelines for the management of cancer in older persons are presented. The organization and thoroughness of coverage of important topics is excellent, no salient aspects are omitted and there is a minimum of overlap.
Assessment: This book is a brilliant and original contribution to the field. It is so forward looking that one can find the next generation of grant proposals and directions of future research imbedded in it. The discerning reader will note that the authors have picked up the corner of the rug and found the entire universe connected to it. Transfusing cancer patients (or keeping up the hemoglobin in other ways) helps them tolerate chemotherapy; I bet it's not too bad for the heart or the ability to get up and around either. Reading both the content and what is in between the lines will enrich your understanding of cancer in older persons.
