Description: This review for medical microbiology covers important pathogens that infect humans as well as basic material such as pathogenesis, immune responses, and clinical management.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick, concise review of infectious agents. This type of book is helpful for reviewing material when preparing for an examination. It does a good job of concisely covering a very large amount of information in a clear and simple format.
Audience: This book is written for students studying for examinations especially medical students. However, it would be useful for residents preparing for board certification.
Features: The book is divided into several sections. The first section is a general introduction that includes the pathogenesis of infections, biology of the infectious agents, and the immune response of the host. The next three sections detail infections caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites. This is followed by a section on general clinical laboratory principles and antibiotics. The last section covers the patient presentation of infections from various anatomical sites. The only disappointment in this book is the lack of images for the various infectious agents. The incorporation of clinical specimens, gram stains, parasite examinations would greatly enhance this review of infectious agents.
Assessment: This book offers a good review of medical microbiology. The information is succinct and easy to follow. It is very similar to other review books in medical microbiology. Some good quality images would enhance its usefulness.
