Overview

Aida Palmer performs a spirit medium show onstage at Chinatown's illustrious Gris-Gris speakeasy. However, her ability to summon (and expel) the dead is more than just an act.

Winter Magnusson is a notorious bootlegger who's more comfortable with guns than ghosts. Unfortunately for him, he's the recent target of a malevolent hex that renders him a magnet for hauntings. After Aida's supernatural assistance is enlisted to banish the ghosts, her spirit-chilled aura heats up as the charming bootlegger casts a different sort of spell on her.

On the hunt for the curseworker responsible for the hex, Aida and Winter become drunk on passion. And the closer they become, the more they realize they have ghosts of their own to exorcise...

Twenty years after the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, two survivors cross paths under macabre circumstances. Aida Palmer is working the Gris-Gris speakeasy as a stage medium, and Winter Magnusson, the "Viking Bootlegger," is being haunted by the ghost of a Chinese prostitute who was brutally murdered. It's easy enough for Aida to exorcise the ghost, but not so easy for her to forget Winter. Debut author Bennett's complex and smart romantic leads are refreshingly frank with one another, and they know how to enjoy what they've got. Both Aida and Winter are burdened with terrible secrets, and Winter's ghosts continue to rise between them—literally. Fans of ghost stories will love the pair's spooky, sexy voyage of discovery, which is erotic without being crass. The details of the Prohibition era are well researched but not intrusive, providing a solid and tangible backdrop for the developing romance and supernatural mystery. Most of all, the way Aida celebrates the "comfort and relief" that Winter provides really makes the story special. Expect historical romance authors and fans to eagerly hop on the Roaring '20s bandwagon, following Bennett's very able lead. Agent: Laura Bradford, Bradford Literary Agency. (Jan.)

JUNE 2014 - AudioFile

Smart, engaging, and captivating, this offering, set in 1920s San Francisco during Prohibition, is filled with snappy dialogue and enough fun twists to grab listeners from the minute the earphones go on. Aida Palmer can speak to the dead, and they speak right back. She can also get rid of them, which is a service bootlegger Winter Magnusson needs when he finds the dead from his past turning up almost daily. Amy Landon's low, husky voice for Winter and deliberate, determined voice for Aida are spot-on. An enjoyable romp through an interesting time in American history with a paranormal twist that is icing on the cake. A.C.P. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine
