The novel tells the story of two half-brothers, one black and one white, who grow up in southern Africa and become rivals for the love of a beautiful and enigmatic woman named Rachel. The two brothers, Umslopogaas and Nada, are both born to the same father, a Zulu chief, but to different mothers. As they grow up, the brothers become fierce warriors and rivals for the love of Rachel, a woman with a mysterious past.

About the Author

Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was an English author of adventure novels set in exotic locales, predominantly Africa. King Solomon’s Mines, one of his best-known books, details the life of the explorer Allan Quartermain. She: A History of Adventure followed, introducing the character Ayesha. While much of Haggard’s reputation stems from those two books and their subsequent series, he also wrote nonfiction and short stories.
