Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823–1911) was an American Unitarian minister, author, abolitionist, and soldier who played a significant role in the social and political movements of the 19th century. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Higginson was raised in a progressive and intellectual environment, shaping his future commitment to social reform.
Higginson began his career as a Unitarian minister but soon found himself drawn to the abolitionist cause. A fervent opponent of slavery, he became actively involved in the Underground Railroad, assisting escaped slaves on their journey to freedom. Higginson's commitment to the abolitionist movement deepened, and he went on to become a prominent figure in the struggle for emancipation.
