About the Author

Ann Senisi Scott previously served as the Coordinator of Leadership Programs at Mount Mercy College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She also was the Coordinator of Health Occupations and Practical Nursing at Nassau Tech Board of Cooperative Education Services, Westbury, New York, where she was responsible for several health career programs offered at Nassau BOCES, including Practical Nursing, Nurse Assistance, Medical Assistant, Medical Lab Technician, Dental Assistant and Dental Lab. In addition, she worked to establish a career ladder program from health care worker to practical nurse. Before becoming the administrator of these programs, she taught Practical Nursing for more than 12 years.

Description: This is an easy to read book on the structure and function of the human body and common disease entities. This updates the previous edition published in 2003.
Purpose: According to the author, this book and the accompanying teaching materials are designed to facilitate learning. This well thought out book is easy to read compared to other anatomy and physiology texts.
Audience: It is designed for the "multiskilled health practitioner (MSHP)." However, given the level of material presented, the book would be excellent for healthcare students and a good review for licensed and credentialed healthcare practitioners.
Features: Many of the 22 chapters are systems based. Objectives and key words begin the chapters and topics are highlighted with a dark background with white type easily distinguishable from the regular text. Images and tables illustrate important concepts throughout and boxes (career profiles, medical terminology, medical highlights, etc.) are scattered within chapters. Review questions, exercises, and case studies end the chapters. The book ends with two appendixes, a glossary, and an index. A CD-ROM accompanying the book contains interactive quizzes and other learning activities.
Assessment: This is one of the easiest to read anatomy and physiology books I've seen. As healthcare professions continue to evolve, I hope the authors continue to refine their book in future editions. This is a great entry level textbook for all healthcare students and a resource worthy of inclusion in public and college libraries as well.

I really like the setup of this book. The key terms, lab activities, numerous tables in each chapter, medical links, career profiles, medical highlights, medical terminology linked with each system, and effect of aging all bring each chapter together perfectly and makes this book a great asset to the medical students just beginning their careers.
