Much of this quirky novel is set in a business hotel environment in the middle of a mid-sized city where a handyman by the name of Victor Roswall suffers a traumatic workplace injury, which in turn sets off a domino effect of chaos and misunderstandings.
Hamish Beamish has managed to graphically portray the back of house, day to day workings of an aging midsized hotel as the staff come and go about the routine business of hospitality. But things turn inhospitable at times as the narrative twists and turns through sadness and comic relief and pandemonium as Victor starts experiencing some kind of savant state of mind from the accident. His memory and abilities explode with curiosity and creativity.
But as Victor Roswall tries to adjust to this brand-new and somewhat unsettling state of mind, he becomes the brunt of some cruel universal joke after he is falsely accused, arrested and in turn incarcerated. Adding insult to injury he is ridiculed by the media and friends alike. It seems the whole world has turned on this mild-mannered middle-aged Englishman, until he meets Claire. A sex therapist and intimacy whisperer who opens the prudish eyes of the forlorn handyman to a whole new world. Events take a turn for the terse as Danny, an old work colleague and just out of jail turns up on his doorstep in need of a place to stay. This oddest of odd couples try to co-exist as best they can as Claire elevates Vic's libido up through all his chakras and into the heavens. Danny gets mixed up with the wrong crowd and starts bringing them home much to the dismay of Beamish's protagonist who is busy patenting an idea for innovative EV batteries and toying with an AI adult robot.
