Only A Paper Star & Other Stories
The first five stories were written almost immediately upon my retirement from military service, as homage to Rudyard Kipling’s Soldiers Three cycle, an attempt to put my military experience into perspective for myself, and to explain it to other people. I had even less luck than the usual freelance writer does in interesting a publisher of any sort in those stories – as it was extremely difficult to sort out what kind of publisher to take them to: a traditional military-oriented publication or to one oriented towards women’s experiences? Not fitting into anything resembling a conventional pigeon-hole is something of an ongoing challenge, so I got no further with the Leroy-Orvis-Maculhaney cycle. One was written for a proposed anthology, but didn't make the cut, and the last two stories are re-workings of episodes in my Adelsverein Trilogy, which I thought made interesting stand-alone stories in and of themselves. Having despaired of seeing them published on their own merits by others, as originally intended, I have resolved to make available in this way.
