Boswell - And the early history of Benton County
Some might travel through Boswell today and totally miss the unique history of the small prairie town. It would be easy to do. George the Cyclist did it as he pedaled into town on two wheels in 2017.
I could read the first two words of Boswell's slogan "Hub of" on its freshly-painted water tower near the center of town and tried to guess the rest of it as I circled around it. It came as a great shock that this sad, tiny forlorn town of dilapidated and vacant buildings considered itself the hub of "THE UNIVERSE" of all things.
Boswell is located in the wide expanse known as the Grand Prairie in Northwest Indiana. The wind blows almost continually across the face of the nearly flat and treeless plain. But, the land has a rich and amazing history; it was a prized Indian hunting ground, the herding land of some of Indiana's richest cattle barons and ranchers, the destination of railroad expansion to the western frontiers, an open market for early businessmen and entrepreneurs, and finally, the rural home of patriotic citizens who desire a strong community to raise their families.
Larry McIntyre captures the essence of the history of the land, uncovers deep details of the men and women who settled it, and arrives at the special town of Boswell, which dares to call itself "The Hub of the Universe".
