Overview

Taking advantage of the time afforded her during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, Anna Lucia Richter made the switch from soprano to mezzo-soprano, working with Tamar Rachum from Tel Aviv through a video conferencing service. In her short time as a mezzo, Richter has already been featured on recordings of Mahler's Symphony No. 4 (with Jakub Hrusa leading the Bamberger Symphoniker) and violinist/violist Emmanuel Tjeknavorian's recording of music by Brahms, which shares with the present album the ever-popular Wiegenlied, Op. 49/4. Here, Richter marks her solo debut as a mezzo-soprano with a recital of art songs by Brahms, including several very familiar tunes from the master. To narrow down the selections from his vast catalog of lieder, Richter and pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz settled on the theme of twilight and evening. Brahms wrote plenty of music that comfortably fits this narrative, and the performers did well in designing a program that encompasses the theme but does not become stagnant. Richter's voice sounds comfortable and natural in this range, strong in the upper register (as one would expect from a former soprano) but still developing the power and stability of the lower. Richter and Bushakevitz have been performing together for only a short period of time, but they have developed a solid rapport. PentaTone delivers ideal sound from the Raiding Lisztzentrum ("Franz Liszt Concert Hall"): close and clear but not overly intimate. ~ Keith Finke
