Description: This book is an attempt to authoritatively address issues surrounding the identification and multidisciplinary treatment of intracranial metastasis. Selection of specific algorithms is an important feature of this book.
Purpose: The objective is to gather information from multiple specialties involved in the management of intracranial metastases. The objectives reflect the real-life experiences of many practitioners. However, the book does not meet the authors' objectives, since many key specialties are left out.
Audience: The book is written for neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, oncologists, and neuro-oncologists involved in the care of patients with intracranial metastases. The authors are credible authorities in the field.
Features: Although the intention is to reflect a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of brain metastasis, the book is lacking in many areas. The authors fail to point out the site of origin of different metastases, the investigation of tumors of unknown origin, or the multidisciplinary approach to lung, renal, and other cancers involving the brain and whether a systemic therapy should be considered prior to attacking the brain. Among the authors, there are no oncologists and most of the chapters are written by one author. A book such as Intracranial Metastasis: Current Management Strategies, edited by Sawaya (Blackwell Publishing, 2004), is much more informative about the nuances in the therapy of intracranial metastases. It is disappointing that this book does not reflect its intent.
Assessment: This is a very short book on the multidisciplinary approach to brain metastasis. It has many shortcomings compared to similar books in the field, but could be used by neuro-oncologists, oncologists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons for the brief comments on therapies for this condition.
