Overview

Breast Cancer provides an in-depth understanding of the biology of breast cancer, the natural history of the disease, the use of molecular markers, the interpretation of clinical trial data, and the integration of multiple therapeutic modalities. The single most important fact about breast cancer is the great variation in its natural history and its responsiveness to therapy from one patient to another. The clinician must integrate an assessment of the patient's likely course based on clinical and pathological staging and laboratory studies with objective evidence on the benefits of therapy. The primary aim of this book is to provide the clinician with the tools to do just that. Outcomes of clinical trials and details about commonly used drug regimens, drug dosage, and the expected side effects are summarized in generous tables and figures. Description: This review of the approach to and management of breast cancer uses a well-organized format that makes it easy to navigate as well as figures, graphs, and tables to organize data.
Purpose: In the preface, the author notes, "Optimal patient management is to provide neither too much nor too little therapy. The primary aim of this book is to provide the clinician with the tools to do just that." This book balances the biology of breast cancer with the great variations in the disease. It provides the resources to enable providers to integrate the predicted course of a patient's disease, based on staging, with the clinical course.
Audience: Written by a medical oncologist, the book is directed to an audience that is not immersed in breast oncology. Those who may benefit include residents in radiation oncology, fellows in medical or surgical oncology, oncology nurses, or others in the field of breast cancer who would like to enhance their knowledge base. Although the book defines terminology, readers should have a basic knowledge of breast cancer to get the most out of it.
Features: The 12 chapters can be comfortably read in order or each can be used as a standalone reference. The first chapter addresses the epidemiology of breast cancer, and the rest progress through prevention, natural history, staging, and workup. Final chapters address treatment including surgery, radiation therapy, systemic therapy, and the management of metastatic disease. Each chapter has substantial, relevant references. The author does an excellent job of pointing out where data is inconclusive or where additional results may be published soon. The text is balanced well with tables and graphs. The only shortcoming is that all of the illustrations, including histology slides, are in black and white.
Assessment: This is an excellent, manageable reference for a variety of practitioners who treat breast cancer patients. It is both informative and easy to navigate, with a streamlined approach to the history, progression, and treatment of breast cancer. It is well formatted to present current evidence from a variety of resources in one location with the goal of providing excellent, evidence-based care to patients. This book will be used often.
