Description: This update of a book on breastfeeding provides recent evidence-based information on the science of human lactation. The previous edition was published in 2015.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide clinicians with up-to-date information on the history and scientific evolution of breastfeeding and human lactation. The information is comprehensive and relevant for all levels of lactation providers.
Audience: The intended audience is all lactation care providers. The information addresses the target audience from novice clinicians to expert providers. The coauthors are distinguished in the field of breastfeeding and lactation.
Features: The book begins with a historic look at evolution of breastfeeding, transitions to the clinical view and aspects related to the science of the human body and the process of lactation, and ends by incorporating cultural, religious, and familial aspects of breastfeeding. The numerous pictures and tables throughout the book increase reader comprehension. The color illustrations at the end of the book are very helpful, and it may have been better if they were incorporated into the body of the book.
Assessment: As a midwife and lactation care provider, I found this book to have a wealth of useful information for students and clinicians. The inclusion of history, culture, and family, as well as a diversity in providers throughout the book, provides a comprehensive view of lactation.
