In this art book created for her MFA Animation thesis at Savannah College of Art and Design, Liz Richards explores the creation of environment design for animation using tools commonly applied to character design. By treating environments as characters, a better overall immersion of the audience into the story and richer expericene can be achieved.

This theory is demonstrated by the exploration of three different locations for Richards' original story The Misadventures of Zukini. FIlled with sketches, models, and full color final paintings, this book is a lovely look into the world of concept art creation for animation.

Elizabeth Richards is an art director, concept artist, and animation professor. Though her background is in animation, Liz has been working in the themed entertainment field since 2009--first with Walt Disney Imagineering and now as a freelance artist. She is passionate about environment design and believes background art and worldbuilding are crucial element of storytelling. Liz lives in Southern California with her husband Ben, her three children, and her lucky black cat.
