Overview

After the Civil War, Ben Carter walked from east Texas to New Orleans to enlist in the 9th (Colored) Cavalry Regiment. A good field soldier, he gets into trouble when he can't deal with the prejudice of white settlers. His commander gives him a last chance to save his army career when he puts him in charge of a detachment that must protect settlers from marauding Comanche warriors. Ben learns a lot about the nature of prejudice, but is it enough to keep him and his men alive?

Charles Ray served 20 years in the US Army, and retired in 1982 to become a diplomat. He has been writing fiction since his teens, and has worked as a newspaper and magaqzine journalist, editorial cartoonist, magazine illustrator, and photographer. Reading this book is like being face to face with (a) Buffalo Soldier. Many stories have been told, songs sung about Buffalo Soldiers, but this time it is different. This well written story brings out the humbleness, humaneness and the history of the Buffalo Soldier in such a way that it is not about wars and fighting but about a people.
