Overview

Despite the late-model Willie displayed on the CD cover, this is a collection of 1960s recordings made when the outlaw country star was still trying to make it in Nashville, before his move back to Texas. The music is vintage '60s country, from the Bakersfield-influenced title track and "You Wouldn't Cross the Street to Say Goodbye" to the tears-in-your-beer "Suffering in Silence," and while Nelson's voice doesn't yet possess the authority of his mature years, the compilation illustrates his masterful, if often dark, songwriting skills.
