Overview

Revel in the power of human creativity with this completely revised and expanded edition of Burning Man: Art on Fire, illustrated with over 250 gorgeous color photos.

For one week a year, a remote desert lakebed in Nevada becomes Black Rock City, the home of Burning Man, where 80,000 participants create a temporary community devoted to expression and play. There is no money, no running water—and there are no constraints. Artists bring enormous sculptures for participants to climb. Outrageous Mutant Vehicles glide through an opulent mirage. This is a dreamscape of permission. For seven days and nights, the artistic movement of our time materializes—and then disappears without a trace.

Welcome to Burning Man. Welcome Home.

This authorized collection also includes:

  • Over 150 new photographs and descriptions of individual pieces of Burning Man art from over two decades, including art from the 2022 Burning Man event

About the Author

Jennifer Raiser is a writer, nonprofit leader, and Burner. Burning Man: Art on Fire (2014/2016/2023, Quarto/Epic Ink,) is a love letter to her happiest place on earth, Black Rock City. Known on playa as CocoCabana, she volunteers with the Black Rock Rangers and Gate, Perimeter, and Exodus departments; she has served as the Treasurer and Board Member of the nonprofit Burning Man Project since its founding. She is the author of In the Spirit of Napa Valley (2015, Assouline) and The Art of Being Bill: Bill Murray and the Many Faces of Awesome (2018, Quarto/Race Point Publishing), and has written extensively for the San Francisco Chronicle, Huffington Post, and numerous other publications. Previously, she founded Raiser Senior Services, managing luxury retirement communities as described in her book Designing Retirement Communities for the Future (1998, John Wiley and Sons). She has gratefully served on thirteen nonprofit boards. She earned both a BA in English Literature and an MBA from Harvard University. A San Francisco native, she lives near the Presidio with a superabundance of pets, books, and costumes.

Scott London has been documenting the art and culture of Burning Man for nearly two decades. His images from the event have appeared in many books, newspapers, and magazines, including Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, Forbes, Architectural Digest, San Francisco Chronicle, and the New York Times. They have also been exhibited at museums and shows across the United States and Europe. They were featured at the Smithsonian Institution as part of the landmark “No Spectators” exhibition at the Renwick Gallery. They were also included in the “Living” exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and the “Art in an Ephemeral Age” show at the Institute of Art and Ideas in the UK.

In addition to his photography, Scott is a longtime print and radio journalist. He has written for many magazines and newspapers and his interviews and radio documentaries have aired on NPR stations across the US.

Scott was born in Washington, DC. At the age of five, his family moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where he was raised and educated—and where, as a teenager, he taught himself photography and built his first darkroom. He returned to the US in his mid-20s and eventually landed on the West Coast. He lives in southern California. scottlondon.com

Sidney Erthal is acclaimed for his photography, with a special emphasis on spontaneous portraiture. His international
photographic portfolio includes work with individuals, groups, editorial, fashion, and tourism. His charming informality and quick-witted
humor make him a favorite with those normally reluctant to be photographed. His work has been featured in many international
publications and an increasing number of exhibits. A native of Curitiba, Brazil, he speaks Portuguese, Spanish, and English with
equal flair. Erthal received a degree in tourism before emigrating to the United States in 2002. He has spent the last decade engaging
with and photographing the people and phenomenon of Burning Man. Working with the Documentary Team, he is a beloved figure
welcoming journalists to Media Mecca. He is based in San Francisco, but can often be found in any number of locations around the world,
where he will likely be making friends with someone you know. siderth.com
