Bu'Tiful-U is a youth leadership curriculum focused on self-esteem for adolescent girls of color. The youth leadership curriculum focused on self-esteem is critical to addressing psychological and emotional issues confronting teenage girls. Bu'Tiful-U is designed to enhance self-esteem, instill positive thinking, and further develop unique qualities in adolescent girls. The voices of females, especially girls of color, have been silenced for years. For instance, girls that have been abused and neglected were made to believe it was a way of life and then labeled negatively by society. The majority of these girls are excluded from positive groups that can help boost their self-esteem and inspire them to be future leaders within their society due to their behaviors.
A four-month program
• Four modules (one per month)
• Four units per module (weekly)
Bu'Tiful-U is a meaningful curriculum that supports and empowers girls of color to utilize their voice and be heard in society and the community. Building self-worth, confidence, and healthy relationships are critical for young adolescents' personal and academic growth (Newport News Public School's Strategic Youth Plan, 2017). The works of scholar Rebecca Carroll (1997) can be used as a pillar that depicts the voices of adolescent girls who were from racially diverse, low SES environments. A collective of women of color would be fabulous to facilitate this program, as they may have some kindred experiences to the young women.
Bu'Tiful-U will use pre- and post-tests to measure the girls' essential needs, growth, and the strength of the program. Girls of color have long been deprived of the opportunity to soar through non-academic supports. The youth leadership curriculum seeks to help these girls better understand they have limitless opportunities as long as they keep an open mind. Bu'Tiful-U will be used as non-academic support inside public school environments as a tool to motivate and inspire school administrators, leaders, educators, and other Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) of the importance of appealing to the essential needs of these girls early in their adolescent developmental stages of life. Introducing the girls to such a program model with a focus on self-esteem can potentially help position these girls as leaders in society and the community. At the same time, these girls will be equipped with leadership characteristics and qualities; educational leaders will also change their current mindset regarding how they currently view leadership.

About the Author
Dr. Deborah Ruffin has gone from teen mom to a retired educator, now mentor, and inspirational motivator coach and author. During her Capella doctoral program, Dr. Ruffin developed her capstone idea “Improving Non-Academic Supports for Middle and High School Girls in a Public School Setting” based on her observations and experiences from educating troubled youth. She had noticed that many children – particularly girls raised in difficult home circumstances suffered from low self-esteem.
After completing her capstone and earning her Ed. D with notable honors, Dr. Ruffin continued her research and writing. Dr. Ruffin is also the CEO and FOUNDER of Bu’tiful-U, a Youth Leadership Curriculum Journal for Girls with low self-esteem.
Bu’Tiful-U is a self-discovery journal designed to empower and uplift middle-and high-school girls struggling with confidence and adversity.
