Overview

Bats are blind. An old dog can't learn new tricks. The early bird catches the worm. You may have heard some of these common sayings or beliefs before. But are they really true? Can they be proven using science? Let's investigate seventeen statements about animals and find out which ones are right, which ones are wrong, and which ones still stump scientists! Find out whether a cat always lands on its feet after a fall! Discover whether camels store water in their humps! See if you can tell the difference between fact and fiction with Is That a Fact?

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Life often presents us with perplexing questions, and finding the answers isn’t always easy. Luckily this new series should help you look 'oh so smart!' Each book concentrates on a different topic. On each two-page spread questions are answered in a succinct, clear, and understandable manner. In addition, further-related information is provided. The illustrations, a mixture of photographs and cartoons, will grab students’ attention. So the next time a patron arrives wanting to know answers to questions such as 'Can an alligator really live in the sewer?' Or 'Can you fry an egg on the sidewalk?' you’ll be ready for them! Bibliography. Glossary. Websites. Table of Contents. Index.

Gr 4–6—These books feature popular sayings and beliefs. One spread discusses each entry and a conclusion is reached—the saying is true, untrue, or nobody knows. Apple examines assertions that chicken soup cures the common cold and that going outside with wet hair causes illness. Bromides discussed in Gum include whether a penny on the track can derail a train, and whether a chemical in swimming pools can detect urine. Dog focuses on beliefs pertaining to animals, such as the idea that camels store water in their humps and cats always land on their feet. Donovan's writings are humorous and straightforward, and the books' photos and drawings add to the humorous tone. These titles are similar to the books in Heinemann's "Body Matters" series and will be definite crowd pleasers, especially among reference buffs (the students who would check out the encyclopedias if they could).—Katie Cerasale-Messina, AC Whelan Elementary School, Revere, MA
