Overview

The odd, slightly unearthly sound of the berimbau introduces the tracks on Capoeira Angola, Vol. 2, soundtracks to capoeira, a form of self-defense that has become a kind of Brazilian ritual dance and gymnastics display with its roots in Angola. It's remarkable to watch, especially when two experts work together. And that's the thing -- it's a very visual art. The music supplements it, rather than stands alone. Here, of course, it has to stand alone, which isn't easy for something that's just one part of a whole. However, what's performed here is so good and enthralling that it's impossible not to be taken into each piece. Mestre Moraes lays out the ladainhas, and all the pieces relate to the art of capoeira. It's very rhythmic, essentially just singing and rhythm. The words made up of a mix of opening narrative and corrido. Recorded live, it's not always easy or soothing, but it can reach some intense heights, with the berimbau as the pulse of the music throughout. The songs themselves cover an interesting range, all regarding capoeiristas, even one called "Japan" about Brazilians fighting in World War II. It's all fascinating stuff -- but more than that. This is a peek into a remarkable way of life. ~ Chris Nickson
