The Barnes & Noble Review
Dav Pilkey's caped crusader, Captain Underpants, is fighting the grossest and greenest villain yet in the first of a two-part set that's sure to turn your stomach -- and keep you laughing the whole time.
With Pilkey's patented Flip-O-Ramas and loads of phlegmy humor, The Night of the Nasty Nostril Nuggets follows the rise and fall of the Bionic Booger Boy (until Part 2, that is), from his meager beginnings as snot-nosed Melvin Sneedly to the mucus monster that goes on a serious rampage. The tale begins when Melvin creates the Combine-O-Tron 2000, a machine that melds living beings with robots. But when the geeky inventor sets out to make himself into the most powerful boy ever, a snotty mishap turns him instead into a "greenish, glistening behemoth." Things at school are mostly hunky-dory at first -- aside from the snot on the drinking fountains -- until cold and flu season begins. The Bionic Booger Boy's contact with tissues causes a nasty reaction, but thankfully, Captain Underpants and a little help from an unlikely character put the mutant boy back to normal -- well, almost.
Pilkey's "sixth epic novel," this delightfully disgusting C.U. episode will have you rolling in the aisles. "Squishy action! Smooshy horror! Gooey laffs!" are just the ticket for any kid looking for a gut-busting pick-me-up, and what parent wouldn't want their child to read about a brave hero fighting the forces of boogerdom? A "pick" of the lists that can't be missed.

George and Harold get into a sticky situation in Captain Underpants and the Big, Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy Part 1: The Night of the Nasty Nostril Nuggets, the "sixth epic novel" by Dav Pilkey. Harold and George's latest prank makes "school brainiac" Melvin Sneedly vow to get revenge. But when Melvin transforms himself into the Bionic Booger Boy, things get a little drippy. Gr 2-4-Fourth-graders George and Harold are good at pranks involving ketchup on toilet seats; saving the planet from the "nasty forces of unrelenting evil"; and making fun of Melvin Sneedly, the school brainiac and tattletale. When his robot-making hobby backfires during a class demonstration, Melvin tries to transform himself into a bionic superboy to get back at the pair but ends up as Bionic Booger Boy instead. Chaos ensues after he accidentally doubles and triples in size. George and Harold call on Captain Underpants (the school principal), but he loses his powers when he is covered in saliva. When a bionic hamster hears the terrified cries of his two friends, he comes to the rescue. The typical Pilkey ending leaves the door open for a sequel, and the novel is filled with the familiar comic-book inserts, Flip-O-Rama animations, and black-and-white cartoon illustrations. Fans will love this installment, and the book would probably appeal to slow readers. Adults are likely to be turned off by the use of the words "idiot" and "dumb" to refer to children and by the graphic description of snot.
