Description: This easy-to-read, portable overview of the basics of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is well organized with a focus on key aspects of perfusion-related matters, but without overwhelming detail.
Purpose: The authors' objectives are to provide an "easily readable source" of information about cardiopulmonary bypass. They certainly have met their objectives with this book, which will be of particular benefit for new trainees taking care of patients undergoing surgery with CPB.
Audience: The primary audience is residents and new trainees. The chapters are easy to read, the size makes it easy to carry around, and it provides a nice overview for students or trainees who are going through a cardiac-based rotation.
Features: The book provides a basic introduction to all aspects of cardiopulmonary bypass, including technical set-up, anesthetic management of various stages, and potential benefits/risks. Residents and new trainees will appreciate the easy to read, introductory material. Although diagrams/pictures enhance the text in some chapters, there are no color illustrations.
Assessment: The other books on CPB/perfusion are much more detailed and exhaustive and are best suited for fellows training in cardiac anesthesia/surgery or perfusionists in training. This book is unique in the way it presents CPB for beginners, and thus potentially has a wider audience that includes residents in surgery or anesthesia who go through cardiac-based rotations.
