This collection of stories starts with "El prisionero del Castillo de If" ("The Prisoner of the Castle of If"), a retelling of the main plot of the Count of Monte Cristo. In this case, it is the Abbé Faria, instead of Edmond Dantes, who escapes the "Castle of If" to try to recover a treasure and see his lover, Carolina Grau, again. In "Brillante" ("Glowing"), a boy is born with a strange condition that makes him glow, and his mom decides to prevent him from going outside. Her name is Carolina Grau. In "Olmeca" ("Olmec"), a Spanish conquistador decides to leave Hernán Cortés and the rest of his group to explore the New World by himself. He falls in love with a native woman, whom he baptizes with the name Carolina Grau. With his outstanding storytelling skills, Fuentes presents eight great stories set in different times and places but united by a ghostly and mostly unknown female character. Every story deals with prisons (metaphorical and physical), lack of freedom, and an inability to become someone else. However, Carolina Grau is the reason why all these people want to escape their own enclosures. At the end one realizes, putting all the stories together, that we might actually be reading a novel. Fuentes's poetic language and the continuous plot twist in each tale make this an extraordinary book. Highly recommended for all bookstores and libraries.—María Elena Cruz, Boston
