Description: This is the second edition of a collection of critical care clinical scenarios presented with symptoms and pattern of onset, relevant laboratory data and imaging, approach to evaluation and initial management. The first edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: Readers are presented with a multidisciplinary tool edited by a senior surgeon and two internists noted for direction of education programs in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
Audience: This is a guide for medical students and junior postgraduate trainees encountering critical illness in a variety of situations.
Features: After a brief discussion of the approach to critical illness, readers are guided through over 40 cases based on critical organ system dysfunction. Cardiopulmonary problems are followed by infectious disease, abdominal organ dysfunction, central nervous system lesions, obstetrics, and trauma. A typical case begins with an overview of important teaching points followed by a detailed clinical scenario with a summary of key laboratory findings and occasionally essential imaging. Physiological considerations relative to the case are discussed followed by a high level overview of the approach to the patient and specific management considerations with an emphasis on basic procedures and medication selection. Clinical pearls, a small number of comprehension questions, and a brief reference list conclude each presentation. The reference list for each case frequently cites books and where primary literature is cited, the citations often date to five or more years from publication of this book. The table of contents describes case organization according to organ system while a separate case listing describes specific disease entities. A brief set of review questions are followed by a subject index with specific citations for figures and tables.
Assessment: This update is an improvement on the first edition of this book in that the presentation technique is further refined and production quality is enhanced. However, case summaries sometimes fail to include more recent treatment strategies as reflected in the age and limited reference lists.
