Description: The Case Files series focuses on preparing medical students in the core competencies needed for teaching rounds, step examinations, and USMLE examinations. This is the fifth edition of the book in the series that covers internal medicine. The previous edition was published in 2013.
Purpose: As a review, the book presents each case with questions such as, "What is the next step in the diagnostic workup?" in addition to clinical information.
Audience: This book is geared toward clinicians learning how to approach patients while at the same time incorporating the art and science of patient care.
Features: The book begins by outlining an approach to patient care and problem-solving followed by 60 case studies. Each case has a short presentation with basic questions — what is the likely diagnosis and what is the next step? The authors then outline an approach to the diagnosis, pose specific questions and answers about key facts of the pathology, present clinical pearls, and provide references. The case presentations are concise and to the point. The analysis, clinical approach, tables, and clinical pearls make the concept highly intuitive and an easy, fast read. The cases also incorporate valuable references. This edition has 12 new cases that provide more variety, but I am not sure that their addition justifies a new edition.
Assessment: Although this is one of many books on how to approach patients and clinical medicine, this is a good study aid, providing a complete discussion without getting too deep into the minutiae.
